To keep Locker 227 up-to-date with the latest Australian art auctions, and to continue to improve the historical auction records, we often need to keep two computers running for up to 16 hours a day.
Often though, there are many times throughout the day when the computers are idle, which has been a waste of resources. However, from today, this idle time will now be used by some of the top research companies around the world to work on a wide variety of projects including finding cures for diseases such as cancer and muscular distrophy or for finding clean sources of energy.
This is possible through software called BOINC and the 'World Community Grid' initiative, whose mission is to create the world's largest public computing grid to tackle projects that benefit humanity. IBM Corporation is the main sponsor of the World Community Grid, and is responsible for the software development and hosting.
Anyone with a computer and internet access can also contribute. To read more and install the software please click here . This will also assign you to the 'Locker 227 team', so that those of us who are supporting Australian art can also contribute to this worthy cause as a team, and keep track of how much we have collectively contributed. Note that you can create your own team, or leave the Locker 227 team at anytime.
See below for statistics on the contribution from the Locker 227 team:
