Gallery's shout as it buys Brack's bar

THE National Gallery of Victoria yesterday secured an Australian masterpiece with a deal that relied on a $2 million loan from the state Government, a collector with a change of heart and a group of wealthy Melburnians.

After announcing the acquisition of 'The Bar, 1954' by artist John Brack for $3.2 million, gallery director Gerard Vaughan likened his staff to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

"We always get our picture," Vaughan said.
