Indigenous art 'carpetbaggers' targeted by code Print E-mail

A CODE of conduct drafted to stamp out unethical practices in the indigenous art industry is open for public comment.

The code, which was posted on the Australia Council website yesterday, follows recommendations made last year by a Senate inquiry into indigenous arts.

But even supporters of the voluntary code, to which art dealers, galleries and auction houses could become signatories, say it will fail unless consumers also use the code to inform their purchasing decisions.
