The name is taken from and art heist that occurred in Melbourne in 1986, where Picasso's Weeping Woman was stolen from the National Gallery of Victoria, and was eventually found at Spencer Street railway station in Locker number 227.
Originally it was used as a code name for personal project to link to all images of paintings of the site owner's favourite artists. The idea that 'if you are looking for a painting, you'll find it in locker 227' seemed to perfectly describe the concept of the project. And although the project has grown and developed into the website that it is today, the concept is just as relevant, so the name has stuck.
Check out the articles 'The woman in locker 227 ' from the Sydney Morning Herald, and 'Picasso art heist ' from The Age for further information on this incredible art heist.
