An awkward Whiteley nude raises questions of authenticity |

As Brett Whiteley nudes go, it's not particularly pretty. There is little sensual or fluid about it. In fact, it's clumsy and hunched, with an awkwardly placed breast and a strangely stunted knee.
But artists, particularly those with substance abuse problems, have their bad days, and so the Brett Whiteley nude, pictured, didn't immediately set off alarm bells in the mind of auctioneer Paul Sumner. The work, an ink on paper, was to have been auctioned by Mossgreen in Melbourne on Monday night, but was withdrawn from sale at the last minute.
